Perth local and dating app user Callum Baxter thinks the apps have a level of responsibility when it comes to protecting their users. “I think there is a level of responsibility that dating apps should have, particularly when it comes to people interacting with potentially fake or dangerous profiles,†he said. The 20 year old said at the moment dating apps often rely on “good faith†hoping its users are telling the truth, but this isn’t always the case. According to the Australian Institute of Criminology three-quarters of dating app users were subjected to online DAFSV and one third was subjected to in-person DAFSV. “DAFSV is a form of technology-facilitated sexual violence where perpetrators use platforms to access victims and perpetrate sexual harm,†the report said. The AIC said their study showed dating app users subjected to DAFSV were most likely to report the incident to the dating platform. “It’s very easy to report things that aren’t right on dating apps and I have done it before. Part of it is the the other person doesn’t know that you’ve reported something,†Mr Baxter said. The Australian government has cracked down on dating apps to help protect Australians. Dating app companies are now required to adopt a new industry code, this involves implementing systems which detect “incidents of online-enabled harmâ€. This goal has been brought to life through Wesnet — the National Peak Body for specialist domestic and family violence services. Mr Baxter said from his experience using dating apps the verified feature is a “safety improvementâ€. “Like I said, there are people who cat-fish, there are people there who go on underage. There’s a lot of things that it improves, you know, the person is of age, and it’s also the real person you’re talking to. I think it’s definitely a good tool to have,†the 20 year old added. “I think it’s definitely good to get verified. It’s very important. And obviously it’s not currently mandatory to verify, but I think it is a good idea.†To become verified Tinder users need to provide poof of a valid ID such as a passport or drivers licence and photo verification. “Everyone has a right to feel safe online and in their relationships. The organisation is urging internet users to be cautious after receiving more than 70 reports of the scam since September. The scam emails are designed to scare recipients into paying a ransom in Bitcoin. The scammers use personal details like names, dates of birth, addresses and phone numbers to make the emails seem legitimate. Consumer Protection believes these personal details came from recent data breaches. One email shared by Consumer Protection on social media references Wellard, a suburb in Rockingham. The email writer begins by telling the recipient they “ain’t playing gamesâ€. “I actually placed Malware on a porn website, and you accessed it to watch,†the email reads. “Been keeping tabs on your pathetic life for a while now. “Yeah, Yeah, I’ve got footage of you doing embarrassing things in your house (nice setup, by the way). “I then developed videos and screenshots where on one side of the screen, there’s whatever garbage you had been watching, and on the other part, it’s you **** off (sic). “With just a single click, I can send this video to all of your contacts.†The writer then says they will wipe everything clean if they receive a “privacy feeâ€. “Your dirty secret will remain your secret. I will wipe everything clean once you come through with the payment,†the email reads. They then ask for $2000 USD to be sent via a Bitcoin wallet. Consumer Affairs says there is no evidence that the scammers who send the emails have access to webcams or computers. They urged people not to respond or pay any money and report it via scamnet.wa.gov.au or by calling 1300 30 40 54 The emails should also be reported to Cyber Crime. In December last year, Fisheries and Marine Officers from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) inspected the man’s catch when he returned to the Mary Street boat ramp. They found 31 live rock lobsters that had not had their tails clipped or punched. Karl Brent Holland pleaded guilty at Mandurah Magistrates Court on Tuesday to failing to tail clip a rock lobster within the allowed time and taking more than twice the bag limit. The daily bag limit for western rock lobster is eight and Holland was found to be in possession of more than double this limit. DPIRD officers seized the 23 excess live lobsters and released them back into the ocean. Magistrate Leanne Atkins fined the man $800 for failing to tail clip, with an additional mandatory penalty of $7,750, plus $800 for taking more than twice the bag limit and an additional penalty of $575, plus costs of $300.50. “You knew what you were doing,” she said. “It’s essential that people like you who go out fishing for rock lobster know the regulations. “People like you decimate the stocks for other people it’s pure greed that makes you take more that the bag limit.” Because Holland is a disability pensioner Ms Atkins gave him the minimum penalty. Director Regional Compliance Metro Todd A’Vard said that the whites run offered great opportunities to catch western rock lobsters, however fishers must stick within the bag limit. “Fisheries officers on the West Coast will be on patrol to ensure the fishing rules are followed,” Mr A’Vard said. “This case certainly proves that operating outside the rules for recreational fishers can be a very costly error for the offender.” The rules related to recreational fishing for rock lobster are available in a dedicated booklet Rock lobster Recreational fishing guide 2024–25 and the information can also be found on Fisheries website, or by searching the rules by species and location.
